Storageworks DAT 160 Ejects DDS-2 tape

I'm not able to insert and read an older DDS-2 tape into the above tape drive even though HP says it is compatible. I put the tape in, it ejects briefly, then re-inserts briefly and then ejects it again. I was able to read these DDS-2 tapes at one time. Any idea why I can't now?
