SureStore vs80

If I use SureStore VS80 for the backup copies, do I have to reduce the files and folders' name extension?
I was told the maximum is 8 characters, is it true?

I'd say "false".

That has nothing to do with your tape backup device. It is up to the backup software to decide how to catalog the files put on the tape. Unless you're using a DOS based utility to backup and restore, I would not expect any issues with file name length and extensions.
