Tape backup failure

I have a dds 4 backup and It fails on nightly backup quite often. 5 times in the last 60 days... what is typical... ?
sometimes it is worse. I clean the drive weekly. I use the recommended tapes

Re: Tape backup failure

What type of backup utility (fbackup, tar, cpio, OB, Veritas)? Which version of OS and which Server? What is the exact error message you get? Any error log files?

Re: Tape backup failure

Novell 5.1 server
veritas backup exec 8.x
different errors,

1.

Error on HA:0 ID:6 LUN:0 SEAGATE DAT 06240-XXX.
A hardware error has been detected during this operation. This tape should
not be used for any additional backup operations. Data written to this tape
prior to the error may still be restored.
SCSI bus timeouts can be caused by a tape drive that needs cleaning, a SCSI
bus that is too long, incorrect SCSI termination, or a faulty device. If the
drive has been working properly, clean the drive or replace the tape and
retry the operation.

Re: Tape backup failure

I would defenitely have this DAT drive the system checked with your hardware support. Try backup using a new media (tape). Check if you have any hardware error on SCSI bus, termination and the drive itself.

Re: Tape backup failure

Is this an external or internal drive?
What are the chances...

Re: Tape backup failure

I am going to replace the scsi cable. the tape drive is the only drive on the scsi cable. How do I test for scsi hardware errors?

Re: Tape backup failure

How old this drive is? Did you use it this way (backing up daily and cleaning weekly) all the time?
