The device, \Device\Scsi\adpu160m3, did not respond within the timeout period.

I'm seeing this and other SCSI related errors from a Proliant ML350 G3. Another error, that may be similar is that the SCSI discovery period in the BIOS POST at boot time is increadably slow. I have a DLT VS160 Tape drive connected to the SCSI A channel of the HP 64-bit/66Mhz Dual Channel Wide Ultra 3 SCSI bus on the motherboard of this system, which does not get recognized. This tape drive did work on another system. I've updated the drives under Windows 2000 Server also in an attempt to fix. Any thoughts? Is it possible that the SCSI subsystem on the motherboard DOA? The system is only a couple months old.

Scott, it's more likely the drive doesn't like the on board controller especially if it's on the same bus as the hard drive. Try a 29160 SCSI controller, HP part number C7474A

I ma getting the same error with our Overland Storage power loader (it has a HP LTO-2 tape drive in it. It worked fine for 6 months then al of a sudden it stopped backing up successfully last month. I have tried every thing I can think of to get it working with no luck. The powerloader is connected to our ML530 G2 via an Adaptec 39160 SCSI card. We are backing up 1.2 terabytes of data (or at least we were; now we're lucking if it gets 200GB before failing).

Has anyone found a solution to this problem? I have a ML530 G2 with a HP 64-bit/66Mhz SCSI card attached to a HP StorageWorks VS80 1/8 autoloader. I continue to get the same error message after the drive backs up about 800MB.

I think you have a few problems here, in the compatibility arena.

First off, the post about using the other channel of the on-board controller is right. That doesn't work. A separate SCSI controller is required.

Second, here are the compatible Controllers & Host Bus Adapters:

(From the Tape Drive Hardware Compatibility page for the ML530G2)
http://www.hp.com/products1/storage/compatibility/tapebackup/ISS/detail/16-0017-0004.html
Embedded SCSI channel (if available)
268351-B21 - Dual-Channel Ultra320 SCSI HBA
284688-B21 - Dual-Channel Ultra3 SCSI HBA *
154457-B21 - Legacy Single-Channel Ultra3 SCSI HBA *

(From the Quick Specs for the DLTVS80)

64-Bit/133-MHz Dual Channel Ultra320 SCSI Adapter 268351-B21
Smart Array 5i Controller 226593-B21
Smart Array 5i Plus Controller 264030-B21
Integrated Smart Array 5i Controller
NOTE: This controller ships standard on the HP ProLiant DL380 G2 and DL380 G3 servers. N/A
64-bit/66-MHz Single Channel Wide Ultra3 SCSI Adapter 154457-B21
64-bit/66-MHz Dual Channel Wide Ultra3 SCSI Adapter 129803-B21
64-Bit Dual Channel Wide Ultra2 SCSI Adapter 348757-B21

*Please ensure the adpu160m.sys driver Version 6.1.545.100 or higher (available from www.compaq.com/support) is used in this configuration.

Supported ISV Backup Software Platforms:
* VERITAS Backup Exec for Windows NT/ Windows 2000
* Computer Associates ARCserve 2000, for Windows NT/ Windows 2000
* TapeWare (Linux OS Support only)
* Storage Data Protector

If your drive is installed correctly (terminated, cabled), if you are using the correct card, if you are using a supported backup application and if you are using the correct driver and firmware (you should use the HP Library and Tape Tool to update it), you should be ok.

NOTE: Don't overlook the firmware/drive matchup you need for the tape drive, and especially the autoloader. Loaders are very picky about revs, and the SCSI card.

Finally, if this helps, please don't forget to assign points.
