Manual removal of the tape also requires disassembling the autoloader itself. It's not for the faint of heart and the odds of it all working again are not good although it can be done. If the leader is broken and wound around the take up reel you're out of luck. If you are in warranty call HP support and get it replaced. If you're not, consider contacting a tape drive repair company for professional repair. If you really want to take a crack at it yourself I can send you a doc on how to do it.
