Ultrium 1760 - cannot backup large files

I ma hoping someone can help. We have a Proliant ML370 with an internal Ultrium 1760 drive which is connected to its own HBA Controller. I am trying to backup some SQL databases but it keeps failing. it will successfully backup a small 10MB database (either directly through SQL or using NTBackup) but refuses to backup a larger 5GB database. Would anyone have any idea why this would happen?
