Can someone tell me what the improvements are over the previous firmware?

Solution
HP Library & Tape Tools (the diagnostic tool) often provides a summary of changes for each firmware revision. On the 'get files from web' function, there is a 'detail' button which lists the firmware changes.
Fixed between E15D and E22D:
BugFix:
Allow write from BOT (beginning of tape) on cartridges with cartridge memory corruption (CRC errors only). When not writing from BOT drive will report cartridge as write protected
Enchancement:
Additional MAM ID field information stored
Enchancement:
Support for Universal Cleaning Cartridge (UCC)
Enchancement:
Prevent drive failure if eject button is depressed during a non immediate command
Enchancement:
Improved cartridge memory update algorithm
Enchancement:
Change to ???snapped tape??? handling. If a cartridge is loaded with the leader pin missing and the drive is power cycled, it will be possible to eject the damaged cartridge
Enchancement:
Improved space and locate command performance
Enchancement:
Improved performance and tape handling during stream fail conditions
Enchancement:
Improved retry algorithm when handling off track events
Enchancement:
Improved eject time
Enchancement:
Improved performance in variable mode with variable record lengths
Enchancement:
Improved handling of multiple bus resets which previously would have caused the drive to ???fall off??? the bus

Re: Ultrium 230 external firmware (E22D)
The diagnostics software HP Library & Tape Tools can be used to display revision history.
Start L&TT, go to the 'Get Files From Web' function, select 'show all firmware' for 'all supported devices' - scroll to the E22D firmware, click on it to highlight it (don't worry about the check box), and then click the 'Details' button. That should show the change history of that firmware file.
L&TT can be downloaded at http://www.hp.com/support/tapetools.
