Ultrium 460 keeps ejecting tapes

Hi there,

My Ultrium 460 keeps ejecting tapes. I know the tapes are fine, as they are perfoming succesfull backups from our live server, using also a Ultrium 460 tape drive

when i take these tapes to our second server, and try and restore for testing purposes the Ultrium 460 on the second server constanstly ejects the tapes after about 30 seconds. I have tried 5 or 6 cleaning jobs, but the problem continues

can anyone advise on what may be the issue?

Hi,

The drive or the tape may be damaged or it may  may be incompatible.
You need to run Library and Tape tools (LTT) in order to diagnose the problem.

Collect support ticket just after it ejects and check.

hi there

i ran the "lto drive assessment test" and notice this error message

"firmware rev F5CD is out of date for ULTRIUM 2-SCSI, update to rev F63D

the drive has experienced a fatal head calibration error"

does this mean my tape drive is completely dead?

Mostly the drive is gone bad.

You can just try update the firmware and run the test once.

Did you manage to resolve this issue? I have an Ultrium 460 drive with the same problem (tapes are ejected immediately and LTT reports a Fatal Head Calibration Error), but it already has the latest firmware (F63D).

Not sure if you got this resolved or not.

Is the Tape entering the drive the entire way?

We had a similar issue here where a new guy had put a new cleaning tape in. The sheet with the 50 use stickers was stuck to the side of the tape and came off inside the drive.

Upon noticing the tape wasn't entering completly I pushed open the door and fished the paper out and everything has been fine since.
