Ultrium 6250 tape drive connection to a Proliant G9 Server

According to the specs for the tape drive, both SCSI and SAS cards are acceptable for connecting an LTO-6 tape drive to a Proliant 380 G9 server.     When you look at the tape drives and what cards and cables are acceptable, they show 3 SAS Array cards.    My boss wants to know why such a high end card is required to run a tape drive is it for performance?  Is it there some incompatiblity reason?   Why are only higher end SAS cards listed?   Please help because I cannot place an order until I have an acceptable answer.
