Ultrium 920 SCSI external, optimum parameters

I've got the tape drive on a 2.2 GHZ Pentium running RedHat Linux. I'm using TAR to record a single 512 MB file of uncompressable data. It will record in 18 s(28.4 MB/s). I used the MT command to set drvbuffer to "normal" and can record the same file in 14 s(36.57MB/s). I wonder why that improved my speed? I'd like to believe setblk will do nothing because that's what it suggests in the HP documentation; SCSI blocks are managed in hardware. But what about other parameters like setdensity or stoptions. What does a fellar do with all these parameters, to maximize write performance?
