Ultrium 960e tape drive --supported connection

Hello,
I want to connect my Ultrium 960e tape drive to the N4000 server.
(The SCSI card used in N4000 is A4800A[Single port PCI fast/wide differential (FWD) SCSI-2 adapter])

Is this connection supported?
Which kind of scsi card can be used to connect Ultrium 960e?(only scsi ultra 320)

Thanks and Best regards

Re: Ultrium 960e tape drive --supported connection

The A4800A is a hi-voltage differential (HVD) SCSI adapter and NO HVD SCSI device of any kind (including terminators) is compatible with anything other than other HVD devices. Even if the interface was electrically compatible (which it isn't), the maximum throughput of HVD/FWD SCSI is really not sufficient to supply this Ultrium drive.

Get yourself an LVD SCSI interface and the faster the better although Ultrium does adapt itself to the interface and adjusts itselfs so that it streams as the input permits.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Ultrium 960e tape drive --supported connection

Louis,

Well I hope your N4000 is at least running HP-UX11iv1 (11.11), cos older versions are no longer in support. As you can see on the tape compatability page, only 11iv1 and 11iv2 are listed:

http://www.hp.com/products1/storage/compatibility/tapebackup/PA-RISC/Detail/16-0024-0019.html

Assuming you *are* on 11iv1, then the A7173A U320 card card should work for you - its listed as upported on the rp7400 (N Class), as long as PDC firmware is 43.22 or higher:

http://docs.hp.com/en/9578/u320scsi-supportmatrix.htm

If you're still on 11.00, you could gamble on getting a second user U160 card (A6828A), which is listed as supported with the U960, and has drivers for 11.00, but would the actual tape drive work? If it didn't you couldn't expect any support from HP.

Shalom,

The only reasonable path to use this tape drive is to buy the SCSI card that A. Clay Recommends and to use HP-UX 11.11

Your system may not be fast enough to use the drives full capacity, but you will find the experience reasonable.

Going off the support chart is a path to frustration and wasted time.

Re: Ultrium 960e tape drive --supported connection

Hi Louis,

This is not supported you, as ultrium 960 e tape drive support ultra 320 card so you need to connect a additional U320 card to the server then only the tape drive will negociate rate will be 320 if you connect ultra 160 card it will not negociate the rate to 320.

You can check with command.

# mputil /dev/mpt1 or other.

Thanks,
Avinash
