Unrecognized Media Format

MSL5026 + single SDLT1. Library randomly shut itself down over a period of time. Library PSU replacement appears to have resolved this issue. We have 8+ SDLT tapes which show as Unrecognized Media Format. No data is accessible from these tapes. Solution is an erase...

We have identified the fault with the PSU and would to like to link it directly with the effect on tapes otherwise we cannot confidently say the problem has been resolved.

Has anyone seen a PSU in a possible degraded state causing Unrecognized Media Format messagein Brightstor AS 9.1 over a period of time (with not a mention in any logs, LTT, diags etc.)

Long shot?

Re: Unrecognized Media Format

Can you generate an LTT support ticket for the drive and post it here, after you have loaded a tape that is unrecognized? I'd like to see what (if any) errors are posted to the drive event log.

One suggestion would be to call HP, explain the problem, and ask if you can send in a tape to be analyzed, to determine why it is not being recognized. However, before doing that we should look at the drive error logs.

I'd also suggest running the SDLT acceptance test (within LTT) on the drive, using a new tape.
The journey IS the reward.

Re: Unrecognized Media Format

Hi David,

Thanks for your reply. Here's the ticket as suggested. I have the ltt file if it's more useful to you.
Should be able to run the acceptance test soon.

Re: Unrecognized Media Format

> Thanks for your reply. Here's the ticket as suggested. I have the ltt file if it's more useful to you.

If you could also attach the .ltt file, that would help - there are few things for the library that are stored in the trace logs which are saved in the support ticket. One thing missing in the 'everything' detail level is the current power-on hour for the library. I'd like to know how far back the mechanical positioning errors occurred, but need to know the current Power-on hout.

OK, looking at the drive, it looks clean. First, off the current tape is recognized:

|> Detailed Cartridge Information
|> Cartridge Type : Super DLTtape 1
|> Cartridge Capacity : 110/220 GB (133000 bpi, 56 log tracks)

The drive error log is empty:
|> Drive Error Log (0 entries total)
|> No Entries

So, no problems reported by the drive.

> Should be able to run the acceptance test soon.

That will be good - I don't expect it to find any problems.

It may be possible that the Brightstor messages might be from the library, and not the drive. Attach the .ltt file, and I can see how far back the library errors occurred.

Are there any log files from Brightstor that would have more details errors it encountered?

You could also look in the Windows system event log, and see if there are any entries at the time of error.

The library firmware is pretty old. The current version is 4.23, and you are on 4.08. I'd suggest updating to 4.23.

Re: Unrecognized Media Format

Agree the firmware level. At last visit we found the current version was not supported by CA.

I'd prefer not to post the logs here. I could email them to you?

Re: Unrecognized Media Format

Yes, you can email the logs to ltt_team@hp.com, and just mention this thread.

The support ticket doesn't contain the library current power-on hour. I'm wondering if that field was not decoded in earlier versions of LTT. If you could update to LTT 3.4SR1 (www.hp.com/support/tapetools), I know it should include that field.

If you could update LTT, and then grab another support ticket (and email to ltt_team), that would be great.
The journey IS the reward.

Re: Unrecognized Media Format

LTT update may take a little longer. Older versions of LTT have blue screened/abended MS/Nvl servers. This hasn't happened with recent versions. We tend to use the tool after hours! I'll email those logs. Thanks again

Re: Unrecognized Media Format

I've emailed logs as suggested.
I have erased the affected tapes and asked the client to test them
