Upgrading 5GB External to 8GB, if drive has firmware 2.08

I'm wondering if anyone has any idea of a way to upgrade a 5GB external to 8GB, if the 5GB already has firmware version 2.08. I have tried this, but the upgrade keeps locking up about 1/3 of the way through. I am using Windows 98SE and CB II V8.0. Is is possible that the 2.08 firmware will not allow the 8GB upgrade? Can I flash to an older firmware and then do the upgrade? Can I upgrade in DOS?
Thanks in advance,

John, thanks for you reply.
I found the problem was caused by using 3rd party tapes, I used an HP 8gb tape and the upgrade went through ok.

Hi Leigh,
Quick question if you will.
Im looking at doing the external 5 to 8 GB upgrade also. After the upgrade, could you still use the older 5 GB tapes?
Also I'm usinf ver 7.0 of the CB II software. Do you think that matters?
Thanks

yes you can stil use older 5GB tapes.

the version of backup software should make no difference. The 5 and 8gb products were released at pretty much the same time so both should be recognised. You can always download colorado backup from the HP website if you have problems.

Re: Upgrading 5GB External to 8GB, if drive has firmware 2.08

I am also a bit confused:
Have upgraded my 5gb external to 2.08 in DOS.
All went fine. My old 5gb tapes run fine under CBII 9.1, WIN.ME
Am I now all set for 8 gb backup when my
ordered 4425 tapes arrive, or is something
else also neccessay ?

Eric, if you have ordered the 8 GB tapes you're good to go. You can now use both 5 and 8GB tapes in the drive

Re: Upgrading 5GB External to 8GB, if drive has firmware 2.08

Please Help. The application log was full this morning, events have since been saved. Backup was unsuccessful this morning. Was still loading with no byte count. I cancelled the job, but is as yet still running altough i know this takes time, but it indicated to use the cleaning tape which i did then once removed asked me to put overwritable media in the drive but as soon as it loads the tape it asks for it to be removed and the use cleaning tape light is on again. this has happened twice now. Can you please help?

Re: Upgrading 5GB External to 8GB, if drive has firmware 2.08

Wow, finally mangaged (almost):
Have two tape-units, one 5 gb, one 8 gb.

1. Upgrade the 5gb to 8gb.
---------------------------
Downloaded the C4466-18000 files from hp.
The setup.exe would not start on my win.me pc, simply did not respond at all. Burned the mentioned files to CD via nero, and set up another pc with win95. The setup.exe on the cd on the win95-pc started now, but had trouble with the cd.label. On the win.me
the label read "c4466-18000", on the win95-pc
it read "c4466_18000". Setup.exe would not have it. Managed via a hex-file-fix-utility
to change the compare-string in setup32.exe
on the cd to "underscore", and now setup.exe
ran ok. Stopped later as it found no tape unit. Had to install shuttletech drivers on
the win95-pc, but after boot win reported
error "scsi(002)" in some VXD-thing. Managed
to run the setup.exe without boot, and now
the upgrade went through fine !!! Had
a C4425 tape in the drive, and it responded
during setup. Both 8gb and 5 gb tapes run
fine !

2. The original 8gb unit.
-------------------------
The c4425 tape that I used as mentioned above, did now NOT respond on the original 8gb unit. Freeze during initialize. Ran ok before on the original 8gb.
Thought I should upgrade the firmware from
2.02 to 2.08. Downloaded and ran the
HpQ_FFu.exe. and it went ok. Firmware now
2.08. Now the same c4425 tape does not
freeze, but cycles endlessly during initialize, back and forth. Same with old
5 gb tape. But a fresh 8 gb tape inits ok !! Has the c4425 been damaged during the
freeze or the upgrade or what ??
Can someone pls explain or suggest something ???
