Has anyone been successful with this particular drive modification (7000 standalone -> 7000 loader)? I'm be using the faceplate from a dead 4000 loader.

I'm upgrading an ol' DLT4000 2/28 library (A4850A #402) with 2x standalone 7000s for a challenge. Will also have to rewire the library SCSI ID control ribbon to fit the 7000 "loader" header, as it doesn't have the "optional power connector" of the 4000.

The firmware CAN be different, depending on the personality of the drive and yes, it can be changed (done that before). Some firmware versions do not talk to the loader port. There is also a different spring placed under the cartridge holder so the tape can slide easier in and out of it when operated by the robotics of the loader. You should change that as well but it will work unchanged as well.

Changing the firmware requires special tooling to do so, for end-users this is not possible.
