Solution
Luis,
In the faq of DLT tapes they say:
How long do DLT tapes last?
Because of the tape and drive design, HP DLT tapes are tested for 500,000 head passes, over 10,000 cartridge uses, and have an archival life of 30 years
This isn't mentioned in the faq of LTO, but it will be the same order of magnitude (if not more as the tape is less vulnerable in LTO than in DLT tapes).
So just set the values high enough, depending on your tape usage. If a backup session fails when a tape was used, write donw the tape label. If it happens again with the same tape, it is time to replace it.
