Re: What to know before upgrade a MSL6000 TL?

Hi,

First you need to know whether you're using SDLT or LTO tape drives, and how many of them.

The base MSL6000 models either have 26 or 52 slots, with 2 or 4 SDLT drives respectively, or 30 or 60 slots with 2 or 4 LTO drives respectively.

Details of part numbers for upgrades can be found in the Quickspecs here:

Hope this helps,

Regards,

I think this document is pretty helpful when you are planing on drive upgrades:

Here is the MSL-series Upgrade Matrix

Check at the top of each page for the corresponding MSL model.

Re: What to know before upgrade a MSL6000 TL?

Maybe I'm a fool but I don't understand wich components need to be upgraded. I take a look at MSL front and also MSL rear and found this information:
* Model: MSL6000 (in Matrix PDF this model don't appears)
* 4 Drives LTO-4 Ultrium 1840
* and from Data Protector 230 slots

It's possible with this simple information know wich components need to be upgrade?

Cheers and thx again

Re: What to know before upgrade a MSL6000 TL?

Hi,

If you've already got LTO-4 drives then you already have the biggest capacity drives available at the moment.

I'm not sure how you'd get 230 slots though. A 4 drive library would normally have 60 slots...

What does your boss want to achieve by the upgrade ? Ability to back up more data, or ability to back up data quicker ?

Cheers,

Rob

Re: What to know before upgrade a MSL6000 TL?

"MSL6000" is the "family name". You can combine existing modules (and link them together with an "elevator" for the cartridges) to form a larger library that is not even orderable with a single part number.
Maybe you can dig out the old delivery papers to find out how your library looks like today.

Re: What to know before upgrade a MSL6000 TL?

It looks like you have 4 modules (10U) since the maximum available capacity per MSL is 60 slots.

So in this case you probably need to get more tape drives, and in case you are on fiber, you would also need E1200-320 NSR (AD577A) interfaces.

If you are planning for perfomance you should have one LTO4 drive per NSR, a maximum of two drives is permited with a performance decrease.

Also these MSLs will only support one NSR card per "card cage" level.

Re: What to know before upgrade a MSL6000 TL?

Hi Efrain:
You're right this is what I'm looking for: more drives. The question here, because I'm newbie on this terms, is how to perform the upgrade meaning wich components need to be buyed/upgraded, how to perform the correct upgrade (the steps) and every information that help me on this job.

Thanks

PS: And yes I'm on FC technology

Re: What to know before upgrade a MSL6000 TL?

Nobody can suggest what you need if nobody knows what you currently have (MSL model, drive technology, connection type, etc.)

Hope this helps!

Hi:
How can I get this info? It can be done using Data Protector or what method do you use?

Yes, a few screenshots with the characteristics will certainly help and maybe a few photos from the front and rear.

Re: What to know before upgrade a MSL6000 TL?

OPen the web interface, copy and paste the drive properties, count the slots and drives.

Hope this helps!

Re: What to know before upgrade a MSL6000 TL?

Ok, here goes the information I could recover from DataProtector Software and also from Library (directly from GUI):

HP EML Series
- Drives: HP Ultrium 3_SCSI_1, HP Ultrium 3_SCSI_2, HP Ultrium 3_SCSI_3, HP Ultrium 3_SCSI_4
- 230 slots
- Firmware: L63S

Interface Controller Status (1-2):
- Model: HP NS E2400 Fibre Channel
- Host Ports Fibre Channel: 2
- Device Port: 4
- Firmware Revision: 5936

Robotic:
- Firmware: 1222(6.26.55)

I try to get some pictures with my cell phone but it's not clear (attached here). Hope this help a little more to understand my situation and give yours some info in order to help me.

Cheers

Re: What to know before upgrade a MSL6000 TL?

OK, this is an EML library, something totally different compared to MSL6000 family.

This library can have a maximum of 505 slots and a maximum of 16 (LTO-4) drives.

You currently have 230 slots and 4 drives.

So I would suggest upgrading the number of slots.

Re: What to know before upgrade a MSL6000 TL?

Wich slots means? The hole where tape goes? When you said upgrade to 500 slots means to upgrade to 505e configuration?

Re: What to know before upgrade a MSL6000 TL?

You can add slots by adding modules or swap drives from LTO-3 to LTO-4 or both.

By upgrading from LTO-3 to LTO-4 you double the capacity.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: What to know before upgrade a MSL6000 TL?

But replacing LTO3 with LTO4 means buy new LTO4 drives and trash the old ones? Wich is the better strategy here in order to grow up the capacity of the library?

Re: What to know before upgrade a MSL6000 TL?

You can probably even mix LTO-3 and LTO-4.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: What to know before upgrade a MSL6000 TL?

Hello!

Ok yes, that's a completely different library hehehe :)

This seems to be the EML245e

Now, here comes a question:

Do you need more capacity (GBs) or performance (GB/s)?

And this can be answered in different ways...

- You can migrate from LTO3 to LTO4s (including the tape media) and you will boost the total capacity as the LTO4 doubles the size, and has better performance.

- You can also add CAPACITY modules to add more cartridges into the library, but this will only give you that... cartriges.

- On a EML245e you can install up to 8 tape drives (so you can add 4 more) and if you run multiple backups at a time (one per drive or so) you will be boosting the performance.

Here's the trick for adding drives:

If you want to add LTO3s (AD568B) [up to 4] you will need the drives of course and another interface controller (AD569B) [just one]

If you want LTO4s (AH682A) [up to 4] you need an internal LTO4 Network Kit (AJ001A) [just one]

And you need to verify if you need an extra power supply (AD563B)[I believe you do, but verify on the back of the library just in case]

*** You can still keep your LTO3 drives and Media, the LTO4s can read and write on them, but of course the performance will remain close to the LTO3s. What you need to be careful is not to use LTO4 media in the LTO3 tape drives, they don't like it ;-) ***

Re: What to know before upgrade a MSL6000 TL?

Thanks for this great reply it helps a lot but some questions remain. I don't have clear the definition (concept) about slots and drives. I tell you what I'm understand and you'll tell me if is right or not. By a slot I understood it's a hole where cartridge reside and by drive I understood there is a mechanical or robotic part of the library where cartridge is inserted when is needed (backups, cleanup and so on). If this is right and I understood well then by adding more drives I can run, simultaneously, more than one job (if the TL have 6 drives then 6 backups or cleanup jobs can run at same time). But if I have a maximum capacity of 245 slots (EML e71 + 245e Expansion I though) and saving spaces for mail slots and cleanup cartridges how many cartridges I can have with this configuration? I check the slots and are a lot clean (not cartridge presented) and around 3 or 4 badly.

Cheers
