Why can't my system access my tape drive

I've just attached a tape drive unit to my rx5670 (hp 11.23) and when I perform an IOSCAN I get this result:

0/5/1/1.2.0 tape QUANTUM DLT8000

In my /dev/rmt directory I see all the special device files. However, when I try to perform a tape command, I get errors that make me believe my system still can't see/access my tape library.

mt -f /dev/rmt/2m status
on tape open: No such device or address

# tar -cf /dev/rmt/2m //
tar: cannot open /dev/rmt/2m

I did try each device in the /dev/rmt directory but non of them worked. I was thinking about deleting all the files in the /dev/rmt directory and rebooting server and tape drive.

Any other thoughts!

Could you verify the driver, it should be stape not tape.

Hi.
Normaly, the correct permission of the device file is:

666 bin:bin

You please check again.

Thanks for the responses.

1. The permissions on the files were ok.

2. I'll need to check on the tape but I believe it was loaded but I was doing so many different things it could have been unloaded.

Something physicaly is wrong.
The Sw state says NO.
Your you sure it is connected to a good SCSI controller. Is your drive supported on the scsi controller? What is the HP partno off your drive

Got my tape drive to work. I followed the same routine when I built my daughters bike and nothing worked, I read the directions :)

After I found the owners manual on my tape drive here at the HP web, I found out that I needed to connect a couple more cabels and SCSI terminators to my device. After I made sure my tape drive looked like the picture I downloaded :LOL: my tape drive came online.

Btw,

When I look at my /dev/rmt directory, I see a bunch of different device files and from what I've seen, the files in my directory aren't any different from those in others. So, of those files, which one should I be using (ATT or BERKELEY)
