I would replace my DLT tape with new tapes

Did you try to reset the hw? It can be due to an old problem, not present now.

Re: continual CLEAN DRIVE message...why?

Suggest reading of some of the causes of the above on some great info on this web site.
Another suggestion is to download the Library and Tape Tolls from HP (Hotfix 3.5 version) and run some diags on the drive.
By analysing the logs it should inform you of any problems with media or H/W.

Re: continual CLEAN DRIVE message...why?

I've seen this problem on a system before, but it was specifically with Fuji tapes. Maxell tapes in the same drives worked perfectly. Put in a brand new Fuji tape and the drive cleaning light would come on. I have no idea why - Fuji tapes have worked fine in plenty of other installations that I've seen....
A sysadmin should never cross his fingers in the hope commands will work. Makes for a lot of mistakes while typing.
