dat24x6 restore problems with arcserve 7
This is a strange one :-
I have an HP Netserver LH3 with a seperate adaptec 2940 controller with an HP Surestore dat24x6 (firmware U812, latest) attached.
The server is running netware 5.1 sp4 with arcserve 7 with all the latest patches. The server only backs up itself over multiple tapes.
We are having problems when trying to restore from tape 2 or 3, tape 1 is always ok. We receive the error E1056 Invalid File Header. This seems to happen when restoring via, media, session or tree.
The tape server log also reports the following :-
6 Jul 15:14:56 Mount Magazine Successful
16 Jul 15:18:15 SCSI-ID 5: (SCSI MOVE MEDIUM)
16 Jul 15:18:15 (05) *** Illegal Request ***

16 Jul 15:18:15 Medium source element empty - changer (3B 0E)
16 Jul 15:18:15 E6092 Fatal - Uncorrectable error - Tape may be damaged or drive may have malfunctioned, try head cleaning

16 Jul 15:38:37 Failed to get tape information from database [4]
16 Jul 16:10:35 E6958 Communication Failure on SCSI Loop
We have configured the server to use the canwpabd driver with the clear switch. We have also set the adaptec driver with the lun_enable=ff switch. The adaptec bios settings have also been checked for
SCSI DISCONNECTION should be ENABLED.
SYNCHRONOUS NEGOTIATION should be DISABLED.
PARITY should be ENABLED.
SCSI TRANSFER RATE should be set for 5MbSec set to 10 (minimum)
The scsi card has been replaced and a different autoloader used (HP Surestore 12000e) but still the same results.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Jonathan

Re: dat24x6 restore problems with arcserve 7
Hello,
Let me get this straight.
You are backing up the server using 3 tapes, right? When you try to restore from tape 1, it works; from tape 2 or 3, it fails, saying incorrect header. Did I understand you correctly?
Well I guess the answer is, you have to begin restoring from tape 1! Then it should get hold of tape 2 and then 3, one after the other. You cannot begin restoring from tape 2 or 3. The restore has to be done exactly like the backup; with the tapes in the same order.
Hope I understood you correctly.
Vince

Re: dat24x6 restore problems with arcserve 7
Hi Vince,
The problem seems to occur when the files needed to restore are on tape2 or 3. All the tapes are in their original positions from the backup.
Thanks
Jonathan
