I guess you mean the DA and MA function in HP's data protector product?

The DA reads from / writes to a file system on a disk.
The MA reads from / writes to the tape drive and it talks to the robotic device in a library.

The disk and media agents are completely heterogeneous in design, and a media agent on one OS can back up a disk agent from another OS. So, for example, a Windows server with the media agent and a library can back up a disk agent on any other operating system (for which the disk agent was written).
