file mark to media error

I'm using WinXp and "internal" HP Colorado 5GB with NT Backup program. Get following error. The HP support web site says WinXP works with HP internal drives, but has problems w/ external. Is this true?

Error: The device reported an error on a request to write a file mark to media.
Error reported: Hardware failure.
