mt tell on Ultrium 960

I am using HP Ultrium 960.

I've properly initialized device under my linux system. I'm using kernel version 2.6.14.

When i use command:
mt -f /dev/nst0 tell
i have: /dev/nst0: Input/output error

ioctl(3, MGSL_IOCGTXIDLE or MTIOCPOS, 0xbfdc59a4) = -1 EIO (Input/output error)

Is there any way to get current tape block position? using mt or by using original
HP tools.

Other command works correctly, like:
tarring to/from /dev/nst0
mt -f /dev/nst0 fsf x etc..

I am able to get block position from "mt status" command, but it is relative block pos from last file, and i need to get absolute block position (from the beginning of the tape), to have some information data to double check am i reading correct file or not.

Anyway i've runned "HP StorageWorks Library and Tape Tools" on Debian and it seems works. Looking for command that can replace
tell from mt.
