poor performance with DLTvs80
Hello,
i have a perform prob with my HP surestore DLTvs80. Following infos :
-Win 2000 Server SP3
-Adaptec 2940u2w LVD
-LVD port terminated (BIOS)
-LVD cable, active termin.
-no other device on whole controller
-Veritas BackupExec 8.0
-all WIN Updates, incl. ASPI
-Blocksize 64k
-no virus scan
-HW compression=on
-BIOS Speed on 80MB/s fpr device
-SCSI ID 5 (default + and 13 tested)
I read a performance between 30-40 MB/sec. I think this is too slow because the manual said it should write much more (up to 250 MB/sec). I have seen a 80 MB/sec long time before, until now the bad 30-40 MB/s. I really don't know what to do, i have done all i know. Tapes are all the right ones, HDDs are checked and defragmentated.
Have someone still got an idea ??
Regards
stratos

Re: poor performance with DLTvs80
Stratos,
for evaluating disk access speed please use HP PAT http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/document.jhtml?lc=en&docName=lpg50134
for checking drive's speed use HP LTT http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/storageworks/ltt/index.html

Re: poor performance with DLTvs80
Hello,
If you've got 30-40Mb/s, you're getting excellent speed with your vs80! I think you should have said 30-40Mb/min.
Normal native vs80 speed should be 3Mb/s. Compressed is 6Mb/s.
Do the following to see where the fault is:
1. Clean the drive using a DLT1 or vs80 cleaning cartridge.
2. Replace the data cartridge.
3. Replace the cable
4. Replace terminator.
5. Replace HBA.
6. Replace drive with current HBA, cable and terminator.
Slow performance can be a number of things. It can be wrong blocksize (which is your case, is 64Kb, which is the recommended value for vs80, so that is out of the window), it could be SCSI resets cuz of hardware problems (cable, HBA, terminator), it could be worn heads by the drive, or other drive problems (cleaning cartridge, new data cartridge, new drive).
HTH,
Vince
