storageworks 1/8 and Linux

We are thinking of using our storageworks 1/8 autoloader with a Linux server.
I have tried to get O/S compatibility on HP site but the file is always damaged so I cannot read it.

Our plan was to use cpio or tar to backup and recover, as we use disk to disk partial backups for our database into a backup area.

It has been suggested that the autoloader may be able to have a card attached/inserted so that it can be connected to the LAN and hence shared, which would be an acceptable solution, but directly connecting to the server is what I had first considered
