I'm using a HP dat C1537 and my os is Suse 8.2 and whatever I do I can't make a backup on a tape. I can see it but I can't use it because it gives a Input and Output error.

Hi there.
Did you try to 'tar'some files to the drive
or 'cpio' ?
Maybe the setup for drive is not correct.

Yes I have tried it and this was one of te results:
tar -cf /dev/st0 /root

tar: Removing leading '/' from member names
tar: /dev/st0: Wrote only 0 of 10240 bytes
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
