12.0 upgrade from 11.5, how much additional memory to VSAs and FOM??

I'm going to do the 12.0 upgrade tonight...

I've already upgraded the CMC.

Only thing I can prepare for is the VSAs or FOM not having enough memory.

How much additional memory do they need??

VSAs have 7 GB RAM each.

FOM has 2 GB RAM.

I must plan carefully since our VMware license does not allow hot add RAM, VMs must be shut down first to add RAM.

I must always be sure I have the running VSA and FOM on the same host if the other VSA is shut down for any reason.

Thank you, Tom

I've done 12.0 upgrades on HyperV only for now.

I don't think the requirements are  any different for VMware.

However,  a minimum of 3GB of memory needs to be allocated to a FOM in 12.0.

Storage Node VSAs need a minimum of 4GB.

AO on any of the nodes bumps the memory requirements additionally

I shut down the FOM and bumped it up to 3 GB.

Now I know it's possible the upgrade might hiccup on the FOM...

I'll see what happens later tonight...

one other thing to keep in mind is that the amount of HDD space available to the VSA affects the amount of memory required.  I'd suggest checking out whatever your nodes are currently using and how much free memory they have and then just make sure you add enough memory to that to make that free memory value 3-4gb so when you upgrade you will have enough buffer.

The VSAs are installed to local storage on each host and there's plenty of free HDD space for these VMs to grow if necessary.

Each VSA has 7 GB RAM, allocated by default when it was created.

vCenter doesn't show either one using anywhere near this much at this moment.

But I will upgrade each one to 8 GB RAM.

Is this what you mean??

Re: 12.0 upgrade from 11.5, how much additional memory to VSAs and FOM??

look at the VSAs information through CMC to see how much memory is being used.  the memory usage changes based on the amount of storage the VSA shows as available in CMC...  by this I mean, a VSA with 1TB configured usable will use less memory than a VSA configured with 10TB of usable space.

I can tell you that my VSAs with AO active which have ~4TB total storage per node have 8GB provisioned through hyper-v which show as 7.5GB on the hardware information on the VSA through CMC and of that, I have 5GB free space, so I wouldn't worry about upgrading the memory on the VSAs, but just make sure to upgrade the FOM's memory to its suggested spec which I believe is 3GB.

You need 3GB Memory for the FOM.

The VSAs need the following memory:
