storevirtual vsa 1TB + samsung evo
Does anyone have any implementations with Samsung Evo 840 1TB in Raid1 with 2x Storevirtual 1TB free license (shipped with gen8)?
Is this good ssd for a small san-storage?
any recommendedation of a server that can host this drive and storevirtual vsa in that matter?

Re: storevirtual vsa 1TB + samsung evo
Any X86 server/pc with SATA3 ports should do.
Yes, I've used this drive before. However, I used it with the full license - which makes no difference from a feature or performance POV.
IIRC, in synthetic testing with this drive, performance is not as good as I got with a HP SAS Enterprise SSD drive.
In reality, you're going to be gated in performance by the overhead of SAN I/Q, and your network speed.

Re: storevirtual vsa 1TB + samsung evo
you really need to load test and verify with consumer drives. beyond write duability issues, they often are less agressive with various background tasks that require inactivity on the drive to complete. What happens is that the system under load will run amazing for a while and then suddenly it will go to hell in a hand bag until the drives are able to sort themselves out and then it will go fast again. I can't speak for the samsung, but I've done it w/ the crucial M500's for some medium workloads and they are great. blazing fast, but they get enough downtime to maintain that speed. On the rare occasions where they are getting really pounded for a long time I have seen them suddenly start to preform wost than 5400RPM desktop drives until they are given time to recover.
As for the 1TB license issue. Its the same software so it shouldn't matter. I've only got the 10TB paid ones, but it shouldn't have any affect on this issue.

Re: storevirtual vsa 1TB + samsung evo
I'd take a look at www.servethehome.com to find suggested SSD at discount prices! And benchmarks!
the 840 evo is not recommended for any server tasks due to the low P/E cycle of TLC flash!
Even the 840/850 PRO models require about 33% OVER-Provisioning to reliably work in a server with raid-1/0+1 !
I'd suggest taking a look at the website above for ideas on how to score higher-end SSD for cheap (0.50 per GB) then try to setup the VSA using reliable storage SSD!

I assume that you're using VMware - so the suggestion I have for both server and disks is to be sure it's on the VMware Hardware Compatibility List. Most ProLiant servers are on that list. You can Google VMware HCL to find it on their website.

Re: storevirtual vsa 1TB + samsung evo
Hello @Frankiboy
I have a couple HP Servers that will fit your needs. I recommend looking HP ProLiant DL580 Gen8 that supports ten (10) Small Form Factor (SFF) internal HDD/SSD drive bays and RAID 1 (Mirroring), which are listed in the HP Proliant DL580 G8 series quickspecs. Also look at the HP ProLiant DL560 Gen8 Server, which delivers performance, scalability, and expandability in a dense 2U footprint. HP ProLiant DL560 Gen8 Server data sheet can give more information and specification of this series. And you should definitely consider the HP ProLiant Scale-up x86 Servers. You'd benefit from having the latest Intel Xeon E5-4600 v2 processors which provide a performance increase of up to 40%.
With HP StoreVirtual VSA you can use the power of virtualization to turn a set of heterogeneous and disconnected physical disk drives in your servers and storage devices into a single pool of logical storage capacity. You can register for the free HP StoreVirtual VSA 1TB license once you purchase your server.
I hope this information helps, and please let me know what else I can do for you. If you want to learn more about any of these servers, or how they work with HP StoreVirtual VSA, I can connect you to a specialist to go over the details. Send me a PM if you want help.
