modem and pc speakers

I have pavilion 6545c with a riptide combo card , running win xp. How can I stop the modem from picking up phone conversations. this not a problem with wireless phones.When i pick up my corded phone attached directly to the modem the dial tone and all conversations are audible. this occurs with any phone on this line corded or not.I can tell you that this does not happen after I have to the modem diagnostics window and click on "querry". After doing this the modem does not broadcast over the pc speakers again until I reboot. Thank for the help. Ron

xp says that I have the best driver already installed when pointed to the directory containing the updated drver.When trying to install this driver using the downloaded updater wndows says there was an error and does not finnish. I do believe the solution is in editing the registry and telling the modem not to use the pc speakers.

Your modem is stuck in an off hook mode for some reason. Your best bet would be to remove it using Device Manager, reboot and reinstall it.

You can mask the problem by turning off the speaker on the modem/ Start/Settings/Control Panel/Modems and Dialup/Properties and set the Speaker Volume to off.

If you want to play with the registry you can find your modem init string under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class - here it gets tricky. Your best bet is to drill down this far and do a search on init. It will go something like this:


0000
init Default
1 AT
2 AT&F......

The AT&F string is what your PC says to the modem when it first boots up. After that it just says AT to see if it is alive. You could just add an M0 (0 = Zero) after the AT&F which would turn off the speaker but it would be best if you would just copy the string and post it here then I could tell you if something is wrong with it.

You can also talk directly to the modem to see how it is set up and to verify that the AT&F init string has been accepted. I just recently told another poster in this group how to do that using Hyperterm so you should be able to find it without any problems. To query the modem to find out its current config you can type: AT&V

I suspect, however, that your modem has taken a lightning hit and is just a bit sick so that it is not just a question of a bad init string but we may be able to mask the problem.

The registry init string is AT&FE0V1S0=0&C1&D2+MR=2;+DR=1;+ER=1;W2 . I have already tried uninstaling and reinstaling, with no change in behaviour. I have also turned the modem speaker off as recomend somewhere on this site, with no chchange in behaviour. and again thanks all for the help

after not beimg able to do a manuel input in hyper terminal and exiting, windows said there was a problem. I then went to modem properties and copied this from the log file
