1000Base-T mGBIC and 100-fdx
I'm trying to get a 1000Base-T mGBIC in a 5406zl (firmware K14.33) working at forced 100-full but not having much luck.
With the port set to "auto" or "100-full" I don't get a link, set to "auto-100" it negotiates to "100-Half". I'm willing to accept that the problem is with the BT media-convertor on the other end but it works fine when connected to a port set to "100-full" on one of our 2650's.
Has anyone used one of these mGBICs in this configuration before or have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mo

Re: 1000Base-T mGBIC and 100-fdx
What version of the 1000BaseT miniGbic do you have? A,B, or C?
"show tech transceivers" will tell you.
I believe only the "C" version will support setting it to 100-full.

It is a 'C' revision.
Thanks,

Re: 1000Base-T mGBIC and 100-fdx
It should work if you have a "C" version:
5406# sh int bri b21
Status and Counters - Port Status
| Intrusion MDI Flow Bcast
Port Type | Alert Enabled Status Mode Mode Ctrl Limit
-------- --------- + --------- ------- ------ ---------- ----- ----- ------
B21 1000T-SFP | No Yes Up 100FDx off 0
show run (for port B21):
interface B21
speed-duplex 100-full
What are the settings on the other side (media converter)? Fixed or auto?

Re: 1000Base-T mGBIC and 100-fdx
set it to "auto-100". This should work with the J8177B.
Best regards,
Patrick

Re: 1000Base-T mGBIC and 100-fdx
Unfortunately the media-convertor isn't controlled by us so I can't change anything there but I know that it doesn't support auto-negotiate so it has to be forced.
I've tried auto-100 and unfortunately that only comes up at "100-Half".
I think I'll have to do a horrible work-around and put a 2650 in between the media convertor and the mGBIC interface.
Thanks.

Re: 1000Base-T mGBIC and 100-fdx
What's the brand and model number of the media converter? Converting from fibre to 100BaseT? If it works on a 2650, it should work in a 54xx. Why are you using the mGBIC anyway? Have you tried a 1000BT port on the 5400? Same problem?

Re: 1000Base-T mGBIC and 100-fdx
It's a BT (British Telecom) supplied media convertor so I'm not sure if there is a specific brand/model.

That's what I thought but it's definitely not happy with the mGBIC for some reason.
I don't have any 1000B-T ports in that 5406 (it's using two 24port mGBIC mods as it houses mostly fibre connections) but I might have to put in a 1000B-T mod to fix this issue. It would be a very expensive fix though!

Re: 1000Base-T mGBIC and 100-fdx
I would recommend opening a call with the customer care center in your region. They can give you instructions on how to obtain register setting of PHYs etc. to further troubleshoot the problem.
What exact slot is the module installed in and what exact port is the mGBIC plugged in to?
