16 port module J4907A with Switch 5308xl ?

Hi,

we are having a HP Procurve Switch 5308xl which is currently equipped with 4-port modules (J4821B, up 1000 Mbs per port). We are considering to extend the by exchanging some of the 4-port modules with 16-port 10/100/1000 modules (J4907A).

Do these modules provide 16x 1000 Mbs? Will the interface between the module and the backplane of the 5308xl be likely to become a bottleneck?

I'd appreciate feedback if someone has specific experience. Our other option would be to just have a second 5308xl with 8 x
4-port modules, but then the problem arises how to efficiently connect the two 5308xl switches with each other.

Thank you,

w.w.

Re: 16 port module J4907A with Switch 5308xl ?

The 16 port gigabit module is over-subcribed, so yes the interface between the module and the backplance becomes the bottleneck.

Generally it's recommended to only put your desktop machines on those modules. Servers and switch to switch links should go on the 4-port modules to ensure line rate transfers can be achieved.

I'd recommend you look into the 5400 as your next switch instead. You could connect them together with an 8 port trunk if required for maximum bandwidth between the two.
