2930F POE+ Switch not providing POE+ power

Hi Everyone,

So I've got some 2930F POE+ switches (specifically some JL255A's) and I've plugged in a door control device which requires 1.5A and 20W, which according to the data sheet for this switch is well below it's capabilities. (2.5A 445W) so should comfortably power the device - the problem is that it doesn't and i get an "PD Over Current indication" error on the switch.

Initially we thought this indicated the device was faulty, however when plugged into a tiny, cheap alternative POE+ switch it powers up fine, but it doesn't work in any of the 2930F POE+ switches we have

Any ideas what could be the issue? I've given the port in question high priority for power and there's plenty of Wattage available to the switch (300W unused capacity) but I must be missing something. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: 2930F POE+ Switch not providing POE+ power

Hello ,

PD over current indicates that an attached load has attempted to draw too much current from the switch.
Is it possible to share 'show log' output?
Also share 'show power-over-ethernet' output
And
show power-over-ethernet <effected port number > Status/ Counters

Also can you try to disable and re-enable the Poe port?

Running software version?

Thanks!

Re: 2930F POE+ Switch not providing POE+ power

Hi akg7,

Sure thing. Show logging doesn't show much other than what I mentioned previously

W 07/29/21 10:06:23 00562 ports: port 11 PD Over Current indication.
W 07/29/21 10:06:26 00562 ports: port 11 PD Over Current indication.
W 07/29/21 10:06:29 00562 ports: port 11 PD Over Current indication.
W 07/29/21 10:06:33 00562 ports: port 11 PD Over Current indication.
W 07/29/21 10:06:35 00562 ports: port 11 PD Over Current indication.
W 07/29/21 10:06:38 00562 ports: port 11 PD Over Current indication.
W 07/29/21 10:06:41 00562 ports: port 11 PD Over Current indication.
W 07/29/21 10:06:44 00562 ports: port 11 PD Over Current indication.
W 07/29/21 10:06:47 00562 ports: port 11 PD Over Current indication.
W 07/29/21 10:06:50 00562 ports: port 11 PD Over Current indication.
It's just this repeated constantly.

For show power-over-ethernet we have

Status and Counters - System Power Status

Chassis power-over-ethernet:

Total Available Power : 370 W
Total Power Drawn : 59 W +/- 6W
Total Power Reserved : 63 W
Total Remaining Power : 307 W

Internal Power

Main Power
PS (Watts) Status
----- ------------- ---------------------
1 370 POE+ Connected

Will need to get back to you on the "show power-over-ethernet <effected port number > Status/ Counters" output, it's not currently plugged into the 2930F as we needed the door to work and the device operates the door, so it's in a separate POE+ box at the moment. I'll see if I can get it switched back to get that info

I can confirm however that we did try disabling/renabling the port, trying it in other 2930F's and trying it in alternate ports

Re: 2930F POE+ Switch not providing POE+ power

Hi @Adam-COWC

The POE port ststus is showing as Fault this means the switch detects a problem with the connected PD.  As this is a PoE+ switch the PD can be drawn up to 25.5 watts.

Status and Configuration Information for port 11

Power Enable : Yes PoE Port Status : Fault

You need to log case with support team for this issue.

Re: 2930F POE+ Switch not providing POE+ power

Hello @ Adam-COWC,

Power Enable : Yes PoE Port Status : Fault

It seems there is a hardware issue.

Can you share 'show version' output to get the software version and is there any possibility to reboot the switch?

Thanks!

Hi there,

sure thing, here is the output

show version

I can also confirm that after a reboot the error persists with no change

Re: 2930F POE+ Switch not providing POE+ power

Hello @Adam-COWC ,

I checked latest software version and bug is ruled out here.

Want to know if the fault is present in other interfaces as well?

And, is there any possibility to reboot the switch?

Thanks!

Re: 2930F POE+ Switch not providing POE+ power

Hi @akg7

The fault is present on multiple 2930F's and we've tried multiple different interfaces on each. I can also confirm that we have rebooted the switch, but the error is the same

In any other situation i'd blame the device on the other end being faulty, but as the device works when put in a small POE+ miniswitch that somewhat rules that out

Re: 2930F POE+ Switch not providing POE+ power

Try this

which interface you want to provide.

Interface port# power-over-ethernet

write memory

restart the switch and check the status.

From my opinion its not a switch issue, only need the exact command.
