5400zl transfer speeds

I am tranfering data through inter-module connections on my ProCurve 5400zl switch. Both host have gigabit nic's. I can't seem to get transfer speeds any better than 144 mbps max, which is only 18MBytes per second max. I don't believe this is normal. What is normal? Also, can someone give me insight on troubleshooting transfer speeds?

Re: 5400zl transfer speeds

When performance testing you need to isolate where the bottleneck is. In file transfers it's usually the HDD speed.

HP have a couple of good tools for testing your HDD performance, one is called PAT - http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=lpg50460#pat

To test your network performance I'd recommend iperf - http://dast.nlanr.net/Projects/Iperf/

A lot depends on the NIC as well, some NICs are simply better than others. Enabling Jumbo frames can also increase performance.

Once you determine where the bottleneck is you can determine what needs to be done to increase performance.

One other thing you can do to rule the switch out, is to simply connect a cable directly between the 2 gigabit hosts and run the test again.

Re: 5400zl transfer speeds

I used iperf and ajusted the TCP window to 64k. It resulted in a around 580mb/s. Another test that I did between two other machines was around 800mb/s. I have Solaris boxes, so I was going to try HPReadData instead of PAT. Do you have any objections on using HPReadData over PAT?

HPReadData is also good.
