5406zl - J8697A - Issue with PoE to IP Phone since the upgrade to K.15.03.0007

Hello Community,

Since we upgraded all our 5406zl J8697A to K.15.03.0007 (from older K.11 -12 & 13) since 2 months, we have noticed some weird behaviour.

In 2 months we had 3 occurence of this issue => At one moment some users begun by reporting their Alcatel IP TOUch 4028/4038 reboots regularly => Every 10 minutes.

An alarm LED on the chassis turn on.

Resetting the module + reloading the whole chassis did not fix the issue. We needed to replace the card to restore the normal situation.

W 12/26/11 16:33:56 00562 ports: port B9 PD Over Current indication.
W 12/26/11 16:34:59 00562 ports: port B8 PD Over Current indication.
W 12/26/11 16:35:24 00562 ports: port B4 PD Over Current indication.
W 12/26/11 16:36:01 00566 ports: port B4 PD Denied power due to insufficient power allocation.
W 12/26/11 16:36:21 00562 ports: port B23 PD Over Current indication.Ÿ^ô
W 12/26/11 16:36:37 00562 ports: port B9 PD Over Current indication.

I cannot understand as the power capacity of our system is largely sufficent =>

  Module B Power
  Available: 357 W  Used: 22 W  Remaining: 335 W

PoE    | Power  Power    Alloc Alloc Actual Configured  Detection   Power
Port   | Enable Priority By    Power Power  Type        Status      Class
  ------ + ------ -------- ----- ----- ------ ----------- ----------- -----
  B1     | Yes    low      usage 17 W  0.0 W              Searching   0
  B2     | Yes    low      usage 17 W  0.0 W              Searching   0
  B3     | Yes    low      usage 17 W  0.0 W              Searching   0
  B4     | Yes    low      usage 17 W  2.6 W              Delivering  2
  B5     | Yes    low      usage 17 W  2.6 W              Delivering  2

================================================================

What is surprising is the class 2 device is using  2.6W (the norma range is 3.84 to 6.49 watts) !

Do you rhink it could be a bug like ?

Does it is worth enabling the new feature (since K.15.02.004) PoE-lldp-detect ?

Thanks a lot for any suggestions !

Kind regard.

Karim

Hi,

Do you use "port-security" on iphone ports ?

If yes, you should try to disable the feature named "eavesdrop-prevention". In fact, this option is automatically enabled on port when port-security is enable.

This feature is not compatible with Alcatel IP Phones and must be disable by port with the following command :

no port-security 'port' eavesdrop-prevention

You will find some information here :

Hi MaZ

Thanks a lot for your feedback and the link.

Yes indeed we use port-security but the "eavesdrop-prevention" was already disabled for all secured interfaces.

port-security B8 learn-mode limited-continuous address-limit 3 action send-disable
no port-security B8 eavesdrop-prevention
port-security B9 learn-mode limited-continuous address-limit 3 action send-disable
no port-security B9 eavesdrop-prevention
port-security B10 learn-mode limited-continuous address-limit 3 action send-disable
no port-security B10 eavesdrop-prevention

I am wondering if a kind of SW bug brings an issue in the PoE negociation => B10 PD Denied power due to insufficient power allocation.

and thus impact at the HW level the module (3 times in two months!!) ?

Thanks anyway.

Karim,

Take a look on the latest public released firmware "K.15.06.0008"

Some bugs are fixed, and enhancement added :

This one was fix on K.15.05.0001 :

PoE (PR_0000052701) - If the switch boots up with a powered device (PD) connected, the switch wrongly reports
PD Denied power due to insufficient power allocation.

It can be worth a try.

Hi Maz,

Thank you I am agree, it is worth upgrading to the latest image, as the problem is too weird to be identified by a known behaviour.

Thank you very much for your replies.

Kind regards.

I have a similar problem on a 5412 with 11 modules and two 1500w power supplies.  Recently upgraded from 14.60 to 15.06.0008.  Using Mitel phones, some are not powering up and getting insufficient power log entries.  Before the upgrade all were working as expected.

Performed a "sh power bri" and the overall power is shown with a high reserve and each module has more than enough in reserve.  Overall, 1800w available, 1625 watts remaining.  A module where a phone was not getting power is showing 161 watts available, 142 watts remaining.

The power LED's do not show a power supply problem.

The module was reloaded and in the initial stages, insufficient power was reported but as the reload continued most ports with phones were delivering power at 2.3-2.7 watts.

The problem ports had the power disabled (no power-over-ethernet) and disabled, then enabled and POE enabled.  No change.

A POE injector was then installed at the phone for power and the phone works.  Plugging in a computer at the same location and network connectivity is good.  The wiring distance is 125 feet, all connectors replaced and tested good.

Any thoughts?

I have the same issue on FortiAP's 221E on new 2920 switches running Nov 21 2018 05:06:10  WB.16.08.0001

I am trying to power up the FortiAP's and update them to latest firmware but can;t get it powered up on 2920's but they work on H OfficeConnect switches.. I wonder what is going on

I would mark this as not solved since using a PoE injector is a workaround and not a solution. to the core issue of both devices being PoE+ compliant.
