5406zl VLAN Setup
I have a new 5406 with 4x24 port modules and 1x20port ethernet+4 port SFP module.
I would like to use VLANs on this switch in the following fashion:
VLAN 101 - CORE - ports a1-b24
VLAN 102 - IT - ports c1-c24
VLAN 103 - USERS - ports d1-d24
I have set all these up, and have the uplink plugged into A1, a laptop in C1 and another laptop in D1.
My desktop, which is on a different switch, can ping the switch until I remove the uplink port (A1) from the default VLAN...Once I remove the laptop ports from the Default_VLAN, the two laptops can't ping each other, they can't ping the switch, or get outside the switch...
I know VLAN's need to be routed, but I would have though that routing within the switch would be handled automatically...
What am I doing wrong???
Thanks!

Re: 5406zl VLAN Setup
1) each vlan needs an ip address/subnetmask...
2) you must add 'ip routing' to enable routing...
3) to move mutliple vlans across a connection, you must 'tagged' the uplink/downlink ports into all the "other" vlans...you can leave vlan1 'untagged' on those ports, altho i prefer to always 'tagged' my switch-to-switch link ports...

Re: 5406zl VLAN Setup
After I posted, I think I realized the issue...I have one subnet!
Our office is only given one subnet with 512 hosts. So, to go with vlans now would mean re-addressing everything...not sure my boss will go for that!!
