All HP Site, Intermittently Losing Packets, Cisco WAN Routers working fine, seems to be LAN

Hello,

We have a site with all HP switches, 5308, 5304, and 2524s. We started noticing intermittent packet loss, and intermittent high reponse time (1 out of ever 25 packets). Pinging to the WAN Routers on the customer edge, from another site, respond just fine. The problem occurs in the lan. We did observe some broadcast storms occuring, noticing a spanning-tree issue. We ensured spanning-tree was configured across the lan, which didn't improve the problem, but did reduce any storm(ing).

Our HP core has a consistent 30-40% CPU at all times. We do notice in sh interfaces a high amount of dropped TX, which seems to occur very randomly.

Our core was rebooted, which improved the situation, but there is still packet loss within the LAN. Again, it seems to affect only the LAN. The edge routers respond fine consistently.

Logs do not seem to show very much. This is a LAN with around 30 switches.

Please advise what next steps should be taken.

Thanks

how many vlans and subnets are configured?
how many hosts are in each vlan?
-> you can add vlan's to separate traffic between nodes.
NB! traffic between vlan's needs you also configure a router.
and configure these routers to NOT forward broadcasts, so broadcasts stay within a single vlan.

what protocols do you use?
=> disable unused protocols like ipx/ appletalk etc on all devices (like networkprinters) if not actually used.

You can also try a network-capture like wireshark to determine the source of the broadcast traffic.

About 25 vlans are configured against around 600-700 hosts. Servers are in their own vlan, etc.... The main user vlan is a /23.

Our 53xx's OS software is somewhat older, 10.44, is it worth also upgrading the OS? 11.21 is the latest E release, which seems they made some significant loop-avoidance enhancements.

I will look into whether old protocols are actually needed at the site.

Thanks
