The question is too generic to answer with with no information of what you have.
Yes, an upgrade could speed up the network if there are issues that the update addresses. It can also speed up the network by giving you additional tools to better shape the traffic.
An update is not a brain-dead-simple pill that you take with a glass of water. If you don't take the time to understand what it offers, the defaults could in fact slow your network down or even grind it to a halt.

Generally upgrading is good, as it offers you new benefits and the solutions to past issues, but you have to understand clearly what the new upgrade offers you and make sure that you need it.
In a heavy production environment it is generally not recommended to upgrade until you can get some feedback on how the upgrade is working. That changes if the upgrade offers solutions to your specific issues.
