Compatibility between HP Fiber-Optic Hub 28682A and Switch J4813A
Dear All,
I would like to connect 2 switch J4813A (100 Mega Transeiver) on an old "Fiber-Optic Hub" 28682A.
1) Is it possible ?
2) Is this Optical Hub compatible with 100M ?
3) Is it possible to have switch on 100 Mega and switch on 10 Mega on this optical switch.
I think optical tranceiver (on switch J4812A) didn't accept to work on 100 and 10 to. But I'm not really sure.
I can't dowload docuementation of this optical hub because it's to old and I can't register it.
Thank in advance for your help.
Best Rgds,
Fran├зois-Paul IVART

Re: Compatibility between HP Fiber-Optic Hub 28682A and Switch J4813A
I'll say first of all that this box is old enough for me to a) not know it at all and b) not be able to find any technical info on it either. But from the various descriptions I think it's a 10mbit fiber box, am I right?
In that case, no: it's not possible. Unlike ethernet over copper, there is no speed negotiation over fiber. So unless the fiber optic hub box speaks 100BASE-FX, you won't be able to connect it to your 2524. You should connect the two 2524s directly instead.

Re: Compatibility between HP Fiber-Optic Hub 28682A and Switch J4813A
Hi Marco,
Thanks a lot for your quickly reply. In fact I haven't any speed information on this optical Hub. So I'm going to test them tomorrow with two switch (J4812A on 100M). However, if this Hub didn't work with this speed how can I join 2 x 8 optical fiber on a switch (or hub). Is there any equipement from HP to join them (wich reference) ?
If possible, as simply as this old hub ("plug an play" :-))
Thanks in advance.

Re: Compatibility between HP Fiber-Optic Hub 28682A and Switch J4813A
IVART,
Simply no, it's not possible. The 28682A fiberports are 10Base-FL and those will never connect to 100FX or 1000SX/LX.
The 28682A is an antiquety that could belong in a museum, I suggest you buy something more current instead.
