Compatibility problem between 5300 modules?

I'm trying to configure a 5308xl switch with a j4878 (gbic) module and 4 j4820a modules.

The switch can't came up, it reboots continually.

The only way to start the switch is to unplug the gbic and one of the Fastethernet module (this one seems to be a different version from the other three).

If i plug in the gbic and the fast ethernet module and unplug the other trhee, the switch starts too.

I updated the firmware to the 8.03 release, but this didn't help.

Any suggestion?

Re: Compatibility problem between 5300 modules?

Hello Massimo -

Does the reboots result in a crash message in the event log or 'show boot' CLI command?

No, because I can't get the CLI prompt, the system continually reboots.

Re: Compatibility problem between 5300 modules?

boot the system with gb-module,
then disconnect the gb-module,
then (i hope you have the cli ) and you can copy the crash-log.
but i take it that the gb-module is the CRASH.

helps?

Re: Compatibility problem between 5300 modules?

Hi,

If you connect a VT terminal to the console port of the switch, you'll be able to see the crash and continuous reboot. Set the your terminal to operate at 9600 N81.
If a problem can be fixed, there's nothing to worry. If a problem can't be fixed, worrying ain't gonna help. Bottom line: don't worry.

Re: Compatibility problem between 5300 modules?

With diagnostic logs help I found that each module have OWN microfirmware. During switch boot switch will transparently upgrade module microfirmware. Newest firmware includes new module microfirmwares. Module firmware upgrade events can be sometimes found in event log.
You can also try to look inside crash-logs. Look for valuable info.
#copy ?
event-log Copy event log file.
crash-data Copy the switch crash data file.
crash-log Copy the switch log file.
Check boot prom version also.

Re: Compatibility problem between 5300 modules?

Please specify the Event Log entry at least so I can see how the switch crashes.
Does it say something like:
Bus error: HW Addr=0x06836252 IP=0x00444f14 Task='mHttpCtrl' Task ID=0x11257f8 ??

If not please specify.
