Difference between J4131B and J4858A

Hello,

I would like to know what is the difference between a normal gigabit SX transceiver (J4131B) and the new mini-GBIC SX-LC one (J4858A). I mean, both are SX, so what is the difference? What are these "mini-GBICs"? We quoted for one of these little GBICs for thousands of $, if you buy a new switch, it is much less expensive than a single GBIC!!

Have you ever seen the VA7400?

This mini-GBIC is more or less the same (shape & size) as the VA7400 controller has (i.e. smaller connectors)
Now they also come with the newer Brocade switches.

This could be a vast over-simplification - it could even be wrong, but my understanding is...

The J4858A is compatible with the 9104M & 9108M routing awitches

The J4131B is not

Honestly, I do not know what the difference, I only have description:

J4131B - HP ProCurve Gigabit-SX Transceiver
provides Gigabit uplink ports for the HP
ProCurve Switch 2300 and 2500 series.

J4858A - HP ProCurve Gigabit-SX-LC Mini-GBIC
A small form factor removable gigabit SX
transceiver. It provides a full duplex
gigabit solution and is fully compliant
with Gigabit Ethernet standards

But what I can see in my price-list is that their price is nearly the same - around $500, so may be there is no big difference ?

The 1000Base-SX (J4131B) fiber transceivers are compatible with the HP Procurve Switch GL Transceiver module (J4864A) and HP Procurve Switch 2300 and 2500 series. The 1000Base-SX (J4858A) fiber mini-GBICs are compatible with the HP Procurve Switch GL mini-GBIC module (J4893A), HP Procurve Switch XL mini-GBIC module (J4878A), and HP Procurve Switch 9300 Mini-GBIC module.
The J4131B and the J4858A can be used in the HP Procurve Switch 4100gl series, other switches require one or the other of the transceivers.
