Difference between "managed" and "intelligent" switch?

HP labels some devices as "managed edge" switches (e.g. 25xx, 26xx, 28xx, 29xx and 42xx) and others as "intelligent edge" switches (e.g. 34xx, 35xx, 53xx and 54xx), what is the difference between these?

And what features/performance is needed on a switch to be called a "core" switch instead of "edge"?

The "intelligent" switches does seems to have a lot more functionality (as expected), but is there any particular features that should be included to be labeled as intelligent, or is it just the number of options/features that is conclusive?

The Intelligence is basically a word expresses the Design, Features, Capabilities and Performance on the Intelligent switches.

According to ProCurve: Intelligence means:
â ¢ More granular security and QoS policies
â ¢ Sophisticated control at wirespeed
â ¢ Closer alignment with applications for security, convergence and mobility
â ¢ Consistent user experience.

If we are talking about the features:
- L2: More switching capacity, more control on the Ports based on L2.
- L3: Advanced routing (RIP, OSPF, Multicast Routing), IPv6 ....
- Security: Access control lists ACLs, Virus Throttling, many sophisticated features ....
- QoS: more powerful control on CoS, QoS ....

If you want to talk reality,

Most Switched networks consists of Core and Edge, and usually people goes for Sophisticated Core, and poor Edge.

ProCurve talks about Advanced Edge Architecture by replacing simple Edge, with Intelligent one with many powerful features that helps in many sides:
- More Scalability for future growth.
- More secure and controlled by Administrators.
- Intelligent edge off-load the HEAVY load from the Core (Example: You can implement an ACL on the Edge and not bother the Core to take a security decision....).
- In case the IDM implemented, the Security Policies will be enforced at the EDGE.
- We can talk till tomorrow about that :)

Price wise, if you want to replace a simple Edge with Intelligent Core (2650 vs. 2900-48) so we are talking about 4 Times the price.

And the question is: Does all above worth it to spend 4 Times more money on the Edge ?
