Expert Advice required: Router upgrade

hi,
-
This is in continuation to my previous post:

We have two sites running the following routers for a Frame Relay connection of 256Kbits/sec:
==============================================
Site 1: HP J3138A Router (68030) processor (revision L) with 6144K/2048K bytes of memory
Site 2: cisco 2500 (68030) processor (revision N) with 2048K/2048K bytes of memory.
==============================================
-
In view of an upgrade to 2MBits/sec leased line connection, we are planning to replace them with more robust ones.
-
What are the issues that i should take into consideration?
-
thank you in advance for you replies.

regards

Re: Expert Advice required: Router upgrade

Do you want a router with a built in CSU/DSU are are you required to connect to an external one provided by the local phone company? If internal what kind of physical interface do you need? I see you are in South Africa so I assume you use coax connections. If external what sort of interface will you need to connect to the CSU/DSU?

Will you be running any other protocols other than IP? (Appletalk, IPX, ?) Planning on doing any VPN or VOIP? Do you need any telephone interfaces? Are you planning on running a large access list (filter). How big is the routing table (just a private company thing or the whole Internet?). How much redundancy do you need (can you afford?) Dual processors? Dual Power? Is 2M the most you will ever do or could you grow in the future or add other connections. Do you want a modular router or a fixed configuration router. How many LAN ports? Ethernet or Token Ring?

hi Ron,

thank you for your precious time and reply.

A. Do you want a router with a built in CSU/DSU or are you required to connect to an external one provided by the local phone company? If internal what kind of physical interface do you need? I see you are in South Africa so I assume you use coax connections. If external what sort of interface will you need to connect to the CSU/DSU?

The local phone company will be providing the CSU/DSU only. The router can be pruchased to them or elsewhere. In fact, we are in Mauritius and as you guessed our connections have not reached OCx standards yet.
-
B. Will you be running any other protocols other than IP? (Appletalk, IPX, ?)
Only IP. We had suffered from running IPX over our X25 network years ago.
-
C. Planning on doing any VPN or VOIP? Do you need any telephone interfaces?
No such plans yet. Our main concern is the information/data explosion forecasted for the next months to come.
-
D. Are you planning on running a large access list (filter). How big is the routing table (just a private company thing or the whole Internet?).
It will be very small in each cases. No Internet access over the WAN is the current policy.
-
E. How much redundancy do you need (can you afford?) Dual processors? Dual Power?
Depends on the price for the added redundancy.
-
F. Is 2M the most you will ever do or could you grow in the future or add other connections.
We have plans for expansion of our activities. Thus newer sites are predictable.
-
G. Do you want a modular router or a fixed configuration router.
We have not assessed such possibilities. are there any recommended environment for each of these?
-
H. How many LAN ports? Ethernet or Token Ring?
We believe 2 Ethernet ports will largely suffice.
-
More suggestions and guidances will be most appreciated.

best regards

Re: Expert Advice required: Router upgrade

If you are looking for new equipment then I'd say you are looking at a

Cisco 2611XM Multiservice Router

with 1 NM-4T 4-Port Serial Network Module
at a minimum. You also need a cable to connect to the CSU/DSU probably either

CAB-X21MT X.21 DTE
10 feet (3 meters)
Male
or
CAB-X21FC X.21 DCE
10 feet (3 meters)
Female

But the cable will really depend on what your CSU/DSU wants. I'm guessing at X.21 cause that's what we used to use in Europe. In the US we usually used V.35 cables or even DB25s. This router has plenty of power and there is still room to add a module or two. If I read the catalog correctly it has two builtin 10/100 Fast Ethernet ports. There is a redundant power supply option but to go to a dual processor high reliability model would require big bucks and you would have to go to a 7500. Probably a lot cheaper to just buy a second one and have it programmed and ready to go in case of a failure. The software that comes with it is fine for your purposes just make sure they give you a version of the ios which is GD (means something like General Deployment ie most of the bugs are known or fixed or at least won't kill the router) When I bought my 7500 it had 12.03T on it which was later recalled. I have no idea anymore what they cost. You would have to talk to your local Cisco rep.

If you can live with just one Ethernet port then you might squeeze into a 1700 with a single serial port card. That would limit your growth and flexibility tho. But times are tough and that might be all the budget can afford.
