Forced reboot after TFTP-downloading new software?

Must the switch always be rebooted after you download a new software image, even if you are running from primary flash and you download to secondary?

Is this true for all Procurve switches and all software versiones?

Absolutely not. Only on the on the older switches that had only one flash location did you need to do this.

Thank you for your answer!

I might have confused the software downloading with downloading a new startup-configuration file. Do you know if I have to do a forced reboot in such cases?

Yep, startup-config does force an immediate reboot when copying that over.

Is it known why do you have to do this reboot immediately? Since the new information is only in the startup-config, the running-config in memory should not be affected.

It would be nice to be able to download a kind of template to the startup-config, change a few values and THEN reboot. :)

It's a good question of 'why' and honestly I don't know. I have noticed what I believe is a bug though with the current K.13 software - it will allow you to copy startup-config via SCP/SFTP without requiring the reboot. This is inconsistent with the rest of the ProCurve lineup.
