How to transports several VLAN on an Ethernet link ? Procurve 1800 series

Is it possible to transport VLANs on an ethernet link on a procurve 1800 series 24 G ?
Do I make a trunk ?? but a trunk requires at least two interfaces ...

Please, help me !

There is some naming confusion regarding the word "trunk" since it means something on Cisco and something else on HP.. : ) That is, a Procurve-trunk has nothing to do with VLANs.

As to your question, you can transport several VLANs over one ethernet-link. Just attach the same port as a tagged member of the VLANs you want, and do the same thing on the other side.

Re: How to transports several VLAN on an Ethernet link ? Procurve 1800 series

Yes, I'm agree with you ...I know the difference between the tunk Cisco and the trunk HP. But, in this switch, on the procurve 1800 series, I can configure it only by the web administration and I'm unable to put several vlans on a tagged port. I can choose only one vlan for one tagged port.

There is a solution??

Re: How to transports several VLAN on an Ethernet link ? Procurve 1800 series

Hi Doulcet

VLAN Per Port Configuration:

VLAN Aware Enabled

Packet Type: All

PVID: Set the port according to the Vlan Membership

Uplink Port Configuration:
VLAN Aware Enabled

Packet Type: Tagged

PVID: None

Bear in mind sometimes you have to reboot the switch to reactivate the link, once you set it up

Good Luck!

Ok thanks for your help but I haven't the menu
Uplink Port Configuration in the procurve 1800 series ...
and in the vlan port configuration, I can choose only one PVID

I join a picture of the web configuration.

not in the per-port-config, but in the vlan config you assign ports to a vlan.
see page 2-26 of

Re: How to transports several VLAN on an Ethernet link ? Procurve 1800 series

I'm agree with you Pieter ...but it is not my question ...
Or create an other Vlan which includes other VLAN ??

Example : Vlan 1 port 1,2,3,4
Vlan 2 port 5,6,7,8

Vlan 3 which include Vlan 1 and Vlan 2 : port 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 ???

Excuse me , but it is not very clear for me ..

My question is How to transport several Vlans on a link ethernet ?

Thanks

Re: How to transports several VLAN on an Ethernet link ? Procurve 1800 series

no you just add a port to multiple vlans

Example :
Vlan 1 port 1,2,3,4
Vlan 2 port 2, 5,6,7,8

so port 2 makes a trunk of vlan1 and 2

Re: How to transports several VLAN on an Ethernet link ? Procurve 1800 series

Ok port 2 transport Vlan 1 et 2 but in the vlan port configuration,I can choose only one PVID ...either 1 or 2...

SO ?

Re: How to transports several VLAN on an Ethernet link ? Procurve 1800 series

Hi Francke,
this point is allready answered.
you do not assign a port to transport multiple vlans using the setting "pvid" in the "VLANS, VLAN port config" page.
you assign it on the "VLANS, VLAN Setup" page.

i'll try to explain it.
vlan packets are ethernet packets with an extra identification a "vlan-tag" this tag contains the vlan-number the packet belongs to.
within a switch all ethernet packets are treated as "tagged" to determine what ports to be forwarded this packet.
packets sent/received on a port can be either tagged or untagged.

the "VLANS, VLAN port config" page configures what packets are "untagged".
these packets are internally added a vlan-tag (equal to the pvid) and forwarded within the vlan.
for outgoing packets with a vlan-tag equal to the pvid, the vlan-tag is stripped and sent out of this port to the attached device.
So the port can only belong to one and only one "untagged" vlan, configured by the pvid.
A port can be used for many tagged packets wich is configured by the vlan-setup.

the attachment (from the procurve 1800 mangement guide) displays a switch with only a single vlan configured.
When more vlan's are added you will be able to build a matrix of what ports are assigned to what vlan(s) (multiple!).
Those are the tagged packets.

Re: How to transports several VLAN on an Ethernet link ? Procurve 1800 series

so step-by step
- if needed combine a set of ports into a trunk as an uplink to another switch => T1
else in the steps below read P1, P2 etc instead of T1

- in vlans, vlan port config configure T1 as "vlan aware" + "tagged only".
after this "pvid=" is greyed out and cannot be set.
- in vlans, vlan config add some vlans
- in vlans, vlan-config fill in the matrix to add T1 to the vlans you want
=> thats it.
