Hi all
I need to buy two small gigabit core switches.

2810 should be perfect but they haven't VLAN routing support.

So, i need a couple of switch.

For the same price (more or less), is better the 'old' 2824 or the newer 4204-VL-48GS ?

I think the VL, due to more gigabit port available....

don't know about 4204, but 2824 has only basic routing, up to 16 static routes, no dynamic routing. I would not use it as a core, better 5304 model.

53xx are to expensive.
Actually we don't need full vlan routing but a simple routing between connected vlans.

For example on access switch (2610) I will have two vlan with different uplink path with MSTP.

Maybe that in the future i need routing between those vlans so basic ip routing should be enough.

2810 has not this vlan support.

Hi Alessandro,

I wouldn't start any core business in a switch class that is themed primarily L2 and can route mostly by accident. A device class that makes some sense in the core while not being a chassis yet is the 6200yl (I read "small" mostly as "1RU", not necessarily "damn cheap"). When you need 1000BaseT instead of SFP ports (maybe the core is colocated with most distribution layer switches or it's simply collapsed), the 3500yl class (plus the enhanced routing license, the 6200yl already has this included) might be an alternative, even though you have to buy a lot of useless PoE with it.

The yl/zl class all use the same software, so (AFAIK) no bad surprises in terms of routing protocol and L3 feature support (like I had with the bit-rotting firmware of the 6400cl that neither has decent ACLs nor can it deal with OSPF ECMP routes, to be silent about its strange behaviour when configuring static routes that already happen to be in the RIB through OSPF).

What I'm trying to do is not really a core, but is more like a distribution layer.
My network is very small, three rack and less than 50 server.

Every rack has one 2610 with 4 gigabit port (2 integrated and two mini-gbic).
Those ports are in trunking in pair of two.
One trunk goes to one distribution/core and the other trunk goes to the other distribution core.

I would like to implement MSTP and splitting servers over VLAN (not really necessary because 20 server connected to a 100mbit ethernet will make at maximum 2gbit, and I have a 2gbit trunk)

So, I don't really need an L3 advanced switch. The only think that should I need is a basic ip routing and I think that 4204 with 44gbit port will do the work.

I'm not a big I.S.P., we are a small hosting provider...

2848 or 2900-48G
2848 able basic static routing and all port 10/100/1000 cabaple

or

2900-48G switch able static routing and dynamic ripv1,v2 sum 2x tengigabit empty slot for tengigabit module.All port 10/100/1000

2900 is priced over 1900euro from our seller. Too expensive for us.

2824 (48 ports are too much) is priced over 1500euro and has only basic L3 routing.

4204-48G has too many ports, but is priced less than 1400euro and is expandible with more ports or even a 10gigs port

So, 2824 do less than 4204 does but with a higher price and lower port availability.

I think that 4204 is the best choise for that price.

I don't know very well the differences between 2824 and 4204-48G, but if the capability are the same, 4204 is better.

So, if the 2824 and 4204-VL-48GS has the same feature-set, 4204-VL-48GS is better because is more cheaper and it has much more port availability.

I'll go with 4204-VL-48GS then...
