Obtaining serial numbers for installed modules on Procurve 4000/8000M

Hi,

our company has just produced a new inventory database. It requires information on all LAN kit, right down to the installed modules.

I have a list of the 60 or so switches (all HP Procurve 4000M and 8000M) on our site. I have the serial numbers for the switch chassis but NOT the individual modules installed.

Can anyone tell me a way of obtaining the serial numbers for the cards installed, other than physically removing them and checking the serial number on the inside?

With around 500 or so cards installed, removing and checking them individually is something I do NOT want to have to do!

Unfortunately this information is mandatory for equipment going into our new database so if anyone can tell me a way of obtaining this info from the switch I would be grateful!

hi

you can get them through the management port looking at the nodules installed. or with procurve manageer software will display the modules part number and serial number.

Even toptools may find the serial number but not 100%, even though you can configure the network through it.

Procurve manager will be the best if you have it, or download it from hp's site

I imagine the CLI is the same on most HP switches. Just telnet in and show module.

Guys, thanks for the replies but still no joy I'm afraid.

This the only information I seem to be able to get for the modules:

As you can see, it gives me the part numbers but not the serial numbers.

(I have Procurve Manager installed but cannot see anywhere that gives me the individual module serial numbers on it either)

Perhaps this information is just not available for the 4000M/8000M switches?

Sorry, I don't have any of those models. Maybe someone that does will come along.

In the meantime. you might try running a show tech to see if that turns up something.

copy com "show tech" tftp 10.11.12.13 file.ext

replace 10.11.12.13 with the IP of your PCM.

Just out of curiosity, I did a MIB walk and searched the result for one of my module serial numbers. At least on the 5308, the serial number is in an OID. If that is also true in your case, you should be able to use GetMIBs to pull the info.

Hi Les,

no joy I'm afraid. I was only able to get the chassis serial number from a MIB walk on the 4000M/8000M, not the serial numbers of the individual modules.

However, looks like I've come up with a workaround that will prevent me having to physically remove all the cards. I'm just going to use "dummy" serial numbers for the purposes of the database - this will still allow traceability, which was the original intention.

Not ideal maybe but it will have to do!
