PCM 2.233 and DNS...

Hi at all,
it seems that our PCM Server 2.233 don´t use the DNS.
The nslookup on the server is working well, and under "Preferences - Global-Device Access" the Device Display Name ist set to DNS.
But i only see the devices IP Adresses no Names were displayed.
So I have tried a "Rediscover" of the Devices - but without luck....
After that i have scanned the devices....but this failed too....
So is there anything that i can do, to get the devicenames displayed ?

Thanks

Ulli

Re: PCM 2.233 and DNS...

the PCM server will lookup in DNS, but the adresses must be registered there first!
I don't think the switch has done this registration, so PCM cannot resolve the name/adress using DNS.

Windows clients (unless older then W95/98) will register themselves in DNS.
Some other OS'es may also.
For other DHCP-clients you can configure an option on the DHCP server so the DHCP server registers the client if doesn't do this self.
Many other clients like switches with fixed ip-adresses you must register manually in DNS.

if you got many adresses to add you may try the windows resourcekit utility DNSCMD.exe

Re: PCM 2.233 and DNS...

Hi Pieter, thank you for your answer.

Yes, the switches will not register themselfes in DNS - so they are manually added in the DNS Server. I have checked the entries in this Server, and it seems, that all is OK. Only their names will not appear in PCM - this is a strange behaviour...

Thanks

Re: PCM 2.233 and DNS...

Hi Ulli,
So you added the A-records for these switches
but is the DNS-server configured for reverse lookup for the switches namespace?
Check the PTR-records for reverse-lookup.
(when adding A-records in windows DNS you are asked if PTR record must be added).

Re: PCM 2.233 and DNS...

Hi Pieter - that was the Solution !

In the DNS Servers Reverse Lookup Zones, there are a lot of entries missing!
Afer I manually added a entry, it works without problems....But the reason, why there are missing entries ....I have no idea.

Thank you for your assistance.

Re: PCM 2.233 and DNS...

Ulli, thanks for the points,
When adding A-records you can choose to (or not) add PTR records at the same time.
I you don't add the ptr-records at this time, they will be added when you do a forward lookup.
This reverse lookup cache may have been manually flushed at a time or there may be a cache-timer?
