Primary VLAN

I have several 2650 switches stacked and managed from a 2824 from the primary VLAN. I have changed the Primary VLAN assignment for one of the 2650 switches and now i lost communication with it. I have no means of physical access to it, and i was wondering how i might get again access to it?
I was thinking of temporarly changing the primary VLAN of the 2824 to the one of the lost 2650 switch, gain access and change the primary VLAN back as it was, and then also change back the primary VLAN to the 2824. I do have physical access to the 2824. Is this a viable solution?

Re: Primary VLAN

well I'm not a specialist but as you know devices can comunicate only if they are in same vlan...
so your solution should work perfectly. But I never try it.
So anyway save configuration of your 2824 and then try ....

Be prepare in worst case do recovery on your 2824, so store configuration and also IOS to tftp server....

and if it's production network try to do it not in business hours, becuase in case of recovery it will be down and take some time to fix.

Re: Primary VLAN

Hi

What you have to do is:

1- On the 2800 switch, using menu (easier) go to Stacking menu, then Stack Management, then highlight the 2650 switch which is now offline, then delete it.

2- On the 2650, change back the Promary Vlan to its original Vlaue, which should be the same on all Stacked switches and 2800.

3-Restart the 2650 switch, then it should Join the 2800 Stack if you enabled Auto Grab on the 2800 (commander), if not :

4- Go back to Stack menu in 2800, stack management, then manually add the 2650 switch by its MAC address.

Explaination:
-------------

- Stacking uses only the primary VLAN on each switch in a stack.
- The primary VLAN can be tagged or untagged as needed in the stacking path from switch to switch.
- The same VLAN ID (VID) must be assigned to the primary VLAN in each stacked switch.

Don;t forget to assing points.

Good Luck !!!

Re: Primary VLAN

The problem is that i do not have physical access to the 2650.

Re: Primary VLAN

Hi

You can use one of the stacked swtches (not the commander 2800) and make it Commander for a new Temporary stack has a primary vlan similar to the 2600 switch that you can't access, and when you gain access to this lost switch, you can return back everything to its old configuration.

Good Luck !!!
