ProCurve 5406 and Legacy PoE

We are trying to migrate Cisco 7960/7940 phones along with our Cisco 7970 phones to the ProCurve 5406.

The problem? The 5406 provides PoE to the 7970, and they function perfectly, but not so the 7960/7940 phones. They refuse/fail to operate from the 5406.

Obviously, we've swapped things around, and it's confirmed that the 7960/7940 phone will not work in slots that the 7970 has been in, and the 7970 works in slots the 7960/7940 does not.

Anyone aware of a setting or software switch, or any other method of getting everyone to play well with one another?

Re: ProCurve 5406 and Legacy PoE

Hi Mark,

The manual mentions about support for pre-standard devices, the feature is enabled by default so if it was going to work, it would be working by now. You may want to speak to HP though just in case they know more about compatibility (it mentions supported phones to be mentioned in the FAQ but it doesn't seem the FAQ for these switches is up yet).

What I'm assuming you could do is purchase a splitter which should make these phones 802.3af compliant...

Re: ProCurve 5406 and Legacy PoE

Hi

Cisco has always a different standard from others, the Pin assignment for the PoE to carry Power and Data, mayebe not working with 7960/7940.

Usually you can find in the market a Special Cable to Convert IEEE 802.3af standard PoE pinout to Cisco standard to work with their Access Points and Phones.
