Problem upgrading 5406zl

We had several switches that shipped with K.12.20 . According to the
hp.com web site, upgrading to the latest is a 3-step process:

K.12.20 --> K.12.62 --> K.13.71 --> K.14.60

I didn't get past the first step without losing *all* my ports. The doc
said to 'copy tftp flash Image' and then after the copy and
validation do a reload then leave it alone (e.g. no Power-Cycle).

To which I did, but when it came back I had only 4 ports working.
Indeed, it only sees the last module (the GigE one) of several (no 10g
modules found!).

I then got to thinking perhaps there's some restriction on not upgrading
via the network port, but I couldn't find any. I very much HOPE that's
the case because it is a customer requirement that these switches be
remotely manageable.

Can someone please confirm this is not a requirement, and ideally
provide some clues as to what went wrong?

Should I expect the modules to return with the subsequent two upgrades?

I have 3 more switches to do once this issue is resolved...

Thanks in advance,

Re: Problem upgrading 5406zl

Hi Ken

You should be able to mange them remotely. Just be aware there are features that you can configure to restrict this (management vlan and ip authorized managers).

Secondly. Can you post us the following information from all the devices. ( I also want to see the state of the others)
show flash
show system
show modules

Re: Problem upgrading 5406zl

FYI,

I was able to get the switch back up by connecting a serial line and booting from the secondary image.

Still need to know what went wrong and how to continue the upgrade.

Thanks & Regards,

Re: Problem upgrading 5406zl

Hi Ken

That switch you can take directly to K.14.60 .
Let me high lite a bit of the information you provided.

From Show system
Software revision : K.14.41 Base MAC Addr : f06281-8d2500
ROM Version : K.12.20 Serial Number : Confidential info erased

From Show version
Image Size(Bytes) Date Version
----- ---------- -------- -------
Primary Image : 6791094 11/24/08 K.12.62
Secondary Image : 9798890 08/27/09 K.14.41
Boot Rom Version: K.12.20
Default Boot : Secondary

Software Revision = The upgrades you want to do.
ROM Version gets upgraded by the software version, but does not downgrade again if you change software version down.

Since your Boot ROM >= K.12.14 you can jump to K.14.60.

Remember you must upgrade the primary flash image now
copy tftp flash x.y.z.k K_14_60.swi pri
and then to boot from primary ... boot sys flash pri.

I would suggest you do an erase start after upgrading since you jumped from K.14 down to K.12. There might be some side effects. If you look at the K.14.60 release notes you will see a part titled "Best Practices for Major Software Updates" this describes some more.

Also on the K.14.60 download site.

Re: Problem upgrading 5406zl

Hi,

This is extremely helpful, thanks! However, I am confused that you say I can jump directly to K14.60 when the link you posted (and the one I was following) clearly says that K12.20 requires staged upgrades to K.12.62 and then K.13.71 before going to K.14.60.

Can you explain why you think I don't need to? Note, I have 3 other switches at K.12.20 and K.12.21 I need to do (two 6600s and 1 5412).

Thanks,

Re: Problem upgrading 5406zl

Hi Gerhard,

re: "I would suggest you do an erase start after upgrading since you jumped from K.14 down to K.12. There might be some side effects. "

I wasn't sure if you meant before or after the reboot. I chose to reboot and got everything back except two ports. I rebooted the servers connected to those ports and even they came up. So without yet running netperf on each port, I think I'm good in terms of ping connectivity and no port errors.

I then checked show config and noticed it thinks it last edited using K.14.60 . It's a pretty basic config. Do you think I should still "erase start" and boot again? Here's the config:

Startup configuration:
