Problem with 2650 (Total Rx Errors)

Problem with 2650 (Total Rx Errors)

Firmware revision H.08.98
ROM Version H.08.02

At viewing Status and Counters - Port Counters - Show details
Why Total Rx Errors 16 at FCS Rx, Alignment Rx, Runts Rx and Giants Rx are equal 0??

Excuse for my English

Re: Problem with 2650 (Total Rx Errors)

This is interesting. I've run a few tests myself and can see the same display issue.

On mine I have Total Rx Errors = 304

When I go through the SNMP counters I can see that the etherStatsFragments equals this number.

On your switch, if you run this:
'getmib etherStatsFragments.18' does it equal 16?

In the older ProCurve products the Total Rx errors was the total of the FCS, Alignment, Giants and Runts. In the new products I have a feeling that more counters have been added that are not in those 4 types, but do add up to the Total Rx errors.

Some of the OIDs that map to these counters are:

etherStatsCRCAlignErrors
etherStatsUndersizePkts
etherStatsOversizePkts
etherStatsFragments
etherStatsJabbers
etherStatsCollisions

dot3StatsAlignmentErrors
dot3StatsFCSErrors
dot3StatsSingleCollisionFrames
dot3StatsMultipleCollisionFrames
dot3StatsSQETestErrors
dot3StatsDeferredTransmissions
dot3StatsLateCollisions
dot3StatsExcessiveCollisions
dot3StatsInternalMacTransmitErrors
dot3StatsCarrierSenseErrors
dot3StatsFrameTooLongs
dot3StatsInternalMacReceiveErrors

I'm just not sure exactly which ones are added up to get Total Rx Errors.

What you can do, is use this command:
'copy command-output "walkmib 1" tftp '

This will take a while (5 minutes?) but at the end of it it will copy the complete output to a TFTP server. You could go through this and try to understand what counters go towards the Total Rx errors value.

Hope this helps, don't forget to assign points.

Re: Problem with 2650 (Total Rx Errors)

Yes I observe:

etherStatsFragments 16
etherStatsCollisions 20

dot3StatsSingleCollisionFrames 4
dot3StatsMultipleCollisionFrames 7
dot3StatsDeferredTransmissions 12

Where it is possible to find the description OIDs??

You can find the descriptions for these OIDs in the following MIBs:

RMON-MIB:
http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2819.txt

EtherLike-MIB:
http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2665.txt

Re: Problem with 2650 (Total Rx Errors)

I just ran a few more tests. I rolled back my 2600 to H.07.83, and it does not increment the Total RX errors when any etherStatsFragments are encountered.

The OID itself though is registering these errors and in a duplex-mismatch setup it is helpful to see this.

With the newer firmware releases this OID obviously does increase Total Rx errors as you have already seen.

If you would like to seek further clarification on this behaviour I would recommend you open a call with HP support.
